Golden weld connects Air Liquide to Porthos pipeline
On Wednesday 23 September, the ‘golden weld’ was completed in a small gathering, connecting Air Liquide’s facility in Rozenburg to the Porthos CO₂ pipeline. This connection brings together the different elements of the CCS chain – CO₂ capture, transport and permanent storage – marking another important step towards the realisation of the Porthos chain.
Air Liquide is one of Porthos’ initial customers, alongside Shell, Air Products and ExxonMobil. The company is currently working on the construction of its CO₂ capture facility in Rozenburg. Using its proprietary Cryocap™ technology, CO₂ is captured from industrial processes.
Martijn Lub, Project Manager at Air Liquide:
“We welcome this ‘golden weld’ as a true illustration of joint progress. Large-scale decarbonization in the Port of Rotterdam requires strong, collective effort, and this connection to the Porthos CO2 pipeline shows what we can achieve when we collaborate together.”

Once Porthos is operational, Air Liquide will supply the captured CO₂ to the Porthos collective pipeline. From there, the CO₂ will be transported to the compressor station on the Maasvlakte, where it will be pressurised for onward transport through an offshore pipeline to the P18-A platform in the North Sea. From the platform, the CO₂ will be injected into depleted gas fields approximately 3.5 kilometres beneath the seabed for permanent and safe storage.
