Safe and permanent storage of CO₂ beneath the North Sea

Porthos is an innovative system for transporting and permanently and safely storing CO₂ beneath the North Sea. By capturing and storing CO₂ from industries in Rotterdam that cannot yet decarbonise quickly, Porthos prevents these emissions from entering the atmosphere. In doing so, Porthos contributes to achieving the Netherlands’ climate targets. As part of the Porthos project, CO₂ from industry in the Port of Rotterdam is transported to depleted gas fields beneath the North Sea, where it is permanently and safely stored.

Porthos under construction

Construction of the Porthos system is well underway. Approximately 30 kilometres of CO₂ pipeline have now been laid onshore. In the North Sea, more than 20 kilometres of offshore pipeline have been laid on the seabed. The transformation of the former P18-A gas production platform into a CO₂ injection platform is also well underway. The conversion of the gas production wells into injection wells has now been completed. The first buildings at the compressor station on the Maasvlakte have also been completed.

Collaboration

Porthos is a collaboration between the Port of Rotterdam, Gasunie and EBN. Each of these state-owned companies contributes its own expertise to reducing CO₂ emissions in the Netherlands and plays an active role in the energy transition. Within Porthos, the three organisations bring together their specific knowledge and experience. The Port of Rotterdam contributes its knowledge of the local situation and the market; Gasunie brings expertise in gas infrastructure and transport; and EBN provides specialist knowledge of the deep subsurface and offshore infrastructure.

Together, they are developing important new infrastructure to support the decarbonisation of Rotterdam’s industry.
