Good understanding of the subsurface essential for safe co2 storage
A key part of the Porthos CO₂ infrastructure is the platform and associated depleted gas fields P18-2 and P18-4 – more than three kilometres under the seabed. This is where we will soon store CO₂ safely and permanently, in the pores of the sandstone where natural gas once sat.
The gas fields have been in use for many years. Thanks to that production history and the in-depth knowledge of our geologists, we know very well how to responsibly reuse these fields for CO₂ storage.
‘As a geologist, you are always increasing your understanding of the subsurface. It’s great to use all that knowledge for such an ambitious project,’ Daphne Wiggers de Vries de Vries and Dineke Wiersma, geologists at Porthos, tell us.
‘Geological reservoirs were formed millions of years ago. We cannot design them – we need to understand them. That understanding is the basis for everything: from design and construction to injection and risk management.’
